So how do you chaps spell the shortened form of cardigan? If you spell it 'cardy' you would be a bit odd but I could understand your outrage as there is a clearly defined spelling rule for how to pluralise a word ending in 'y' (Change the 'y' to an 'i' and add 'es' as us Year 3-ers know).
But I spell it 'cardi' and I do not know of any rule for pluralising words that end in 'i' (mainly because I suspect most words we use that end in 'i' in English have a foreign route) Now if we're allowed to write the plural of ski with an s, I'm doing the same for my spelling of cardi.
(I'm ever so tempted to write 'So there!' now)
