A small pellet rifle that I had since I was 8yrs old, a 12 gauge that was bought for me on my 18th and I now have my Grandad’s Winchester 12 gauge, side by side rifle which he left to me when he died. It’s a beautiful thing and apparently worth a lot of money these days to people that know about these things. They’re all stored safely in my old man’s gun cabinet in the UK.
I have them because my Grandad was a gamekeeper for many years at Holkham Hall. He also had his own farm near Burnham so I used to go help out in the summer holidays when I was younger. He used to take me on shoots where we would shoot whatever was in season, pigeons, pheasants, rabbits, whatever it was. Once I was strong enough to hold a rifle he taught me to shoot and then bought me a pellet gun, the same one I have now. From there I kept shooting until I moved away. I haven’t shot for maybe 8yrs now.
To me the gun laws that we have in the UK are pretty much spot on. Here in Aus it’s swung to the extreme opposite of the ‘America System’. I do believe that people should be allowed to own a gun (although not a semi-auto/auto rifle, who needs that?) so long as they have a legitimate reason and correct protocols are in place to manage it. Banning them altogether will only push things more underground, it won’t stop the problem. Although in the America sense they really need to take a long hard look at themselves, that is true.
