the EU referendum also shows the danger - once you legitimise an option by having it as an option at all, it starts to get traction and gain votes by simply not being the status quo. it's easier to point out the problems in something that exists (EU, central govt) than it is to pick holes in something that doesn't, and could mean all things to all people.
and remember - the UK referendum wasn't legally binding. but Art 50 has still been triggered and a hard Brexit has been chosen by those in power.
because once you say 'ok then, you can have your vote' it is very difficult politically to just ignore the result.
(FAOD I am a supporter of the vote and of free determination. History has shown time and time again that there is only one correct side to that debate)
