One chap does seem to have a swing at them first

But then at the end when he decks the bloke they seem to be backing off.

Looks a bit like they were provoked and initially the others were the aggressors but the Stokes goes a bit Incredible Hulk on them and they think better of it. He probably should also back off at that point but easier said than done when the adrenaline is pumping.

As you say though without the full build up/context it's not the whole picture.
