players we have lack quality? And not that the manager is just hopeless at organising them and using them properly?

It would be a shame to throw more money at the defence, only to find out later the players we have aren't actually the main problem. I'm not sure we'd be looking anywhere near as ropey at the back if someone like Hughton or Allardyce was in charge of the same players.
