that high possession style either works if you have world class players who can defend 1v1 and can open up a defence at any moment with their quality. Or if you use it as a defensive tactic like Swansea did - with the main aim of denying the opposition the ball.

We seem to be trying to play like Barcelona rather than like Swansea used to. Which probably isn't going to work with the quality of players we have. I think pretty much all the successful teams at our level in recent years have been built on a solid defence, or by playing a fast, pressing style. Or preferaby both. Not by aimlessly dominating possession.
