I'd read all the books before the TV series was made

To be honest you're just over examining it all, enjoy the ride and remember GRRM is guiding the story which by nature has to be diluted for the TV compared to the addditional detail and missing side stories from the books. I thought the last book lost its way anyway towards the end.
