I think that Swiss ramble site, or whatever its called, once did an analysis that shows how league points correlate to expenditure on players and wage bill. Not perfectly of course, but very significantly. So ultimately it's players on the pitch that determine it.

But a good coach can be one of the main differentiating factors. And I know which of these two managers I'd be inclined to run through walls for.
