When I was a boy we had a teacher who, instead of lines, would set a hundred subtractions. So, for example, he'd pick a three digit number like 571 and make us do (long hand)
57100 - 571 (=56529)
56529 - 571 ....
and so on.
Of course we would fudge things so we always got back to the number he'd first thought of and he never checked throughout...
