First, drop AOL and sign up with a proper ISP - one that does free bog-standard hosting with their connectivity packages. PlusNet used to do this - they probably still do.
Then register your domain name, without any hosting - just the name itself. THen transfer your domain name to the ISP you've just signed up with. This should cost you nothing if you've got free hosting at the ISP. Check with them in advance - but it should cost nothing. Certainly cost me nothing when I did it with PlusNet.
This will get you the cheapest route to email through the domain - that is exactly how I got my myname.org email address that you have in your address book.
Then when you've done whatever preparation or even evaluation into your website, you can look around for dedicated hosting packages. If it's going to be a simple website, you might even want to use the free hosting you get with your ISP.
