....I think it's more that cycling is a sport that lends itself to description. Perhaps a bit like boxing. Something to do with the rawness and simplicity of the competition. And anyone who's ridden a bike kind of knows how it feels, and can describe it a bit evocatively. Even if they're only done it much, much more slowly.

Football doesn't lend itself to writing nearly so much, I don't think. One to watch rather than read about.
