I suspect we need to sell to buy, so if you want to strengthen the team you just have to bite the bullet and find a buyer for whatever assets you are making available.
It is inconceivable that we are not doing the same with the other players you mentioned, but there are obviously no takers at the price(s) we need in order to fund the purchase(s) we want.
So you either sell the better assets (& at a potentially discounted price), and do your business early, or hold out for a higher price/other assets to be sold and have less opportunity to spend the proceeds or end up paying more if prices go up as we near the transfer deadline.
It isn't about realising the best price for every asset, it's about securing the best value overall deal.
We'll only really know whether the Howson sale is good business or not when we've completed our transfer business *and* see what the resulting team is actually like on the pitch.
