But what I have tried to point out is that what looks like 'cheap' isn't actually that cheap when he is a depreciating asset. Which is what is he is unless he will sign a new deal.
There is some merit to the argument about selling him to a rival, but if we are really that dependent on one player we might as well all pack up and go home.
And is he really that great? There is the view that he 'goes missing' and doesn't dominate the ball enough. I've always assumed he does more good stuff off the ball that we don't see / notice.
The idea that he might score 25 is absurd, bearing in mind he has only ever reached double figures once (10).
And so to conclude with the point which I first made, clearly the club will try and get as much as they want for him. But his value is only what someone is willing to pay, and when you work it through, 5m isn't that idiotic after all.
