What makes him stand out?

Not being a dick here, but just being a graduate isn't enough.

Obviously I have no idea what his CV looks like, but things like work experience (paid or unpaid) look good. Things that show dedication and enthusiasm and a good attitude.

Also some firms will be very fussy with graduate in takes (grades, uni etc). So if not in with a realistic shout there, think about some less obvious things too. Lots of big companies, in fact almost all, have an in house legal department. Maybe try them as well as just the more obvious law firm route.
