Yo, Wroth of Great Wisdom, help a brother out.

If I have an image (it's a png) with a white background, how can I change that to a transparent background? I have a windows 8 machine with no magic image software on it (MS Paint?) and a Linux box I can install something like the Gimp on, if that's the way to do it, 'cos I seem to have gained an understanding that the Gimp is like a free photoshop for nurds.
