It's not just about the one year remaining next summer though

That in itself is an issue but more importantly next summer we will lose the parachute payment and our income will drop by £30m+. So everyone will know we will be desperate to get rid of any remaining high earners (especially 30 year olds) and will have to take anything we can get. We'd probably even let him go on a free.
