Said this the other week. Under those circumstances it could be argued it makes perfect sense to sell him now, since we will have no bargaining strength whatsoever next summer and will get f*** all for him.
You're last sentence makes no sense whatsoever though. He won't remotely be signing a new contract if we "start well" because we'll be in no position to offer him a decent one with parachute payments disappearing. Before we can start offering decent wages again we will need to actually get promoted, not just "start well", like we did last season. that doesn't get us any extra money whatsoever.
