Despite much of IS coming from disgruntled bands of al Qaeda there are many differences in their approach and there was quite a schism at the time IS started out. One of the huge differences is that al Qaeda preaches winning over local Muslim populations in areas they expand into, whereas ISIS will terrrorise them. And many many more differences in the way they pretend to interpret scripture.
Quite a few of the "rebels" fighting IS in Syria (and being armed by the west) are or have been al Qaeda. At least during the time of bin laden, most of al Qaeda viewed IS as being out of control and dangerous to their cause.
Anyway I'm boring myself now so I'll stop :)
