I agree with everyone else

SF can be done in 2/3 days tops. LA is dull as. I adore NYC - I could write you a full week's worth of stuff to see/do and you'd still have loads left for a second visit. If you're in NYC anyway then you can get a train up to Boston (which I love but doesn't have so many "sights" - I've spent time there with work and it's gorgeous, plus the smugrunning opportunities are amazing) but you probably want to get (the same) train down to DC and spend a night - one day walking the Mall/seeing all the monuments (sounds a lot duller than it is), one day in the museum(s) of your choice (Smithsonian/Space are obvious choices, the CIA one probably less obvious but quite fascinating and really well put together).

TLDR: if you're restricted to 2/3 days then SF if west coast, NYC if east coast.

One day I'm going to fly over and buy a crap car and spend a few months doing a proper American road trip before selling said crap car and coming back again. Finances/health/family means that day isn't coming any time soon though. I want to walk at least part of the AT as well one day.
