He will be worth a lot less this time next year when a) he'll only have a year left on his contract and b) we will be out of parachute payments and extremely keen to off load (which everyone will know).
So the economically sensible thing to do is sell him now. But of course this is football so there are other factors.

I like Howson but one thing that counts a bit against him for me is the fact that he has played in such a wide range of midfield roles. If he was REALLY outstanding at any of those roles you'd never play him anywhere else, and the fact that he has been shifted about so much suggests he's far from irreplaceably brilliant in any position.
