I used to have trouble sleeping, sometimes still do and probs like you found that worrying about it/thinking about other stuff whilst lying there made it worse.
So the best thing I was ever told changed it round for me.
Which was: You have degrees of sleep, deep, shallow etc. And degrees of resting throughout the night. Even when you are awake and lying down you are still resting and your body is still recuperating. So take comfort in the fact that even though you are awake, in fact sometimes probably only barely awake, you are still resting.
I found that once I started to think like that even when I still wake up in the night, it doesn't bother me, I don't worry about it, and I go back to sleep much more easily.
In fact sometimes when I wake in the night, I almost quite like it now as I think how cosy and warm I am tucked up in my bed and feel rested. Before you know it the alarm is going off and you've had a good night's sleep.
Hope that helps.
