That would be true if genuine power was devolved to local authorities

Unfortunately since Thatcher centralised power in the 1980s (in order to crush municipal socialism) local authorities have been very limited in their ability to do much, which has a knock on effect of eroding local democracy.

For my money, the lack of genuine local power is one of the biggest problems in the UK, especially in view of the effect of London.

This is a good piece that I read the other day that argues that the capital of the UK should be moved to Manchester and makes some similar arguments
