Cyprus '84. Liz and Phil where coming on a visit, so the usual protocol was taking place which involved lots of painting and sweeping up.
I was detailed to take a detachment of men and take back control of the storm drains. These things are concrete channels and are 6 foot deep. Full of leaves, discarded empty Ouzo bottles and rotten kebabs.
So me and my men, armed with standard issue bass brooms deployed into the storm drains.
Intelligence failed to inform us that the drain held millions of very well camouflaged Mosquitoes. So we proceeded to clear said drains and with the first sweep in anger upset all the Mozzies.
We got bitten to f**k, but we successfully completed our mission.
It was rather annoying that the old f**ker didn't even inspect our handy work.
Cheers Phil. Next time clean your own duck by drains.
