presumably

(1) he was there to knock off the bent solicitor & young copper, but got trapped by AC12 arriving on the scene so he'd have been trying to bluff his way out

(2) They tried to kill him as AC12 were getting too close to the case and finding out the truth (or at least undermining the story that Farmer was the killer)

And is everyone convinced that H has been identified? Seemed to be trying to give the impression that Kate wasn't...
