Reading the comments below I think what is lacking is an exit strategy for both parties. The Board are too scared to sack a failing manager and the manager won't go of his own accord because it would cost him a year's salary.
The answer for me would be for one of the parties to approach the other with a possible way out that would save face for both of them. For me, this would be Worthy offering to resign in return for a decent severence package, say around six to eight months salary.
He goes with a certain amount of pride intact and the club move on.
