Apple pips contain cyanide

I used to lob my mid morn apple core at the dog who scoffed it down. I made the correlation after noticing a couple of times he wasn't himself and realised that I was KBGing him off. When I told my wife she said, he must know that as well because he spits some of the pips out as I keep finding them when I'm hoovering up (other types of vacuum cleaner are available to pedants).
