I think fans have their own favourites & don't notice what other players are doing. With Alex, he frequently wins or gets the ball back in difficult positions. his main function then is to get the ball to someone in a better position then himself - which he nearly always does - because he can't make defence splitting passes from where he is.
Also because he gets the ball so often he will necessarily make the occasional bad one, which is all some people seem to notice.
Against Huddersfield, first half, I watched him make pass after pass ( I think 9 or 10), some of which propelled the attack & nearly all forward, before he misplaced one. During that time I don't remember Howson doing anything, but I bet he got higher regard than Tettey.
Second half he looked tired & was far less effective, but he'd had to do so much work with little help. Perhaps he could have been subbed earlier, but there's really nobody else to do his - essential - harrying, closing down & tackling.
Don't get me wrong. Howson is a class player who apparently had a brilliant game on Saturday. I'm sure Tettey's had poor games. But the last stats I saw tell me there's nothing wrong with his passing & I don't think he's ever been criticised for lack of effort. After all this time I still think he's our most underrated player.
