The shoes are the only thing that matters

For the rest pretty much anything will do. Don't worry about pro socks, go-faster shorts etc. You may want a wicking top but for a 10k an old t shirt isn't bad, though put some Vaseline on your nipples before any run over about 45 minutes (or end up with bleeding nipples which can be a bit sore for a few days).

But you can't short cut the shoes. Brand isn't important type is. For example I need a flat, neutral shoe. I like Sauconys so tend to buy those (a few models out of date as you get an excellent shoe much cheaper that way) but any brand would do - as long as the actual shoe I'm picking is flat and neutral.

Get the gait analysis done. Say you need to have a coffee and a think. Never return to the shop. Get shoes of the right type that were The Latest Model a few years back online. Run 500 miles in them then get another pair.

Not doing this is a really fantastic way to pick up a whole slew of injuries.
