"But her often crude and informal style (it was later revealed that she had addressed Martin McGuinness as "babe"), and her determination to bring Sinn Fein into mainstream politics, gradually pushed her beyond the pale of Unionist opinion. She also fell out with civil servants in the Northern Ireland Office after accusing them of leaking information to wreck the peace process.
"David Trimble, the Ulster Unionist leader, found her vacillating, offensive and pro-Catholic. Within six months or so of the election, he refused to negotiate with her on big issues, demanding to speak directly with the Prime Minister or his chief of staff, Jonathan Powell. Trimble made no secret of the fact that he wanted her replaced, even touting Peter Mandelson's name shortly before Mr Blair shuffled his pack in October 1999."
