Balls said said that Neil had 'always' been on a 2 year deal, although when he joined we were all told it was a one year rolling deal.
We know Neil was given an improved deal in June '15 so I would assume that was the origin of the 2 year deal (which the club didn't confirm at the time).
The only things Balls denied in that clip is that Neil was given a 'new' £2m/2 year deal out of the blue, and that the size of pay off wasn't a factor in the decision, not that one didn't already exist.
Perhaps the deal was a fixed 2 year term which we 'reset' in'16 on relegation (which might explain the Sun story) or maybe it's always been a rolling 2 year deal and the Sun were the victim of Chinese whispers about it.
