if you were Lafferty / Turner what would you do?

Sit and wait out the last big contract you'll ever get?
OR
Give up 10% / 20% / 30% of your last big contract and then find no-one else will employ you?

Paying them the full value of their contract just to leave is an massively less clever decision than keeping them around and using them (when fit)
