At the Watford game last season, the majority wanted him to stay and get us back. We perhaps didn't realise that the rot had set in already and he had lost a large amount of the dressing room by that stage.
I think the board got carried away with this reaction and rewarded Alex with a brand new deal when his performance didn't merit it. It also occurred when there was no CEO in place to properly assess the situation.
Unfortunately, he's now much harder to move on than before and I think this has been the main reason they've been reluctant to part with him. Money talks at the end of the day and they hoped he'd turn it around and they could avoid the 2 million plus payout to get rid.
