With respect to footwear, personal choice but I'd advise having at least two different types/pairs to avoid pressure and heat in same places.
When training for ascent of Mont Blanc I was doing 10k runs in about 56mins for general fitness and then walks building up from 4 hours to 12 hours once a week.
You need to put the time in or you'll pay on the day
