Tourist classics - go up the Castle, visit the Camera Obscura, do the underground walking tour, up Arthur's Seat if it's a nice day, Britannia

Culture vulture - Scottish National Gallery (absolutely brilliant) and the SNG of Modern Art, the Fruitmarket Gallery (see what exhibitions they've got on), Royal Scottish Academy, Stills (photography exhibitions)

Edinburgh zoo!! I love it

Walk in the Pentlands, lunch at The Flotterstone Inn

Go to Roslin Chapel and see the Prentice Pillar

Eat - The Kitchin in Leith, The Table in the New Town (amazing!!! Totally bonkers - literally one table shared with a dozen people - incredible food)

Drink - the Devil's Advocate near St Giles (good food too), The Last Word Saloon (cocktails, superb place to get gently sozzled but a bit out of the way)

Top tip - take a coat
