It's tempting to interpret his music and his behaviour from our Western, and post-Soviet,

perspective. To me, he was a great composer but a fragile person. To compose music to order was what Soviet composers did - the state was their paymaster - and can't be criticised for that. Many great composers wrote music for despots.
