The KPD leader Ernst Thalmann was arrested soon after

and was executed during the war - think he was in various concentration camps for about 10 years as well as being tortured at Gestapo HQ in Berlin.

Think the SPD & KPD opposition were effective as such; but they didn't work together and split the vote disastrously (which might be what you meant)
