I love Brazil. The country's great, and the nuts are superb, but I mean the film. It's a Terry Gilliam kind-of-1984 thing. It's very dark. Robert de Niro gives one of his standout performances for me: that role could have been played by a hundred lesser actors who'd all have played it roughly the same way, but de Niro takes a small yet pivotal role and really brings something to it few others could.
I also like Twelve Monkeys: Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, it turns out, can both act with nuance and subtlety often absent from their more regular blockbuster outings.
Black Swan is another outstanding performance, this time from Natalie Portman; Little Miss Perfect is exactly the movie you don't expect it to be (and extremely good); Silver Linings Playbook not only has Jennifer Lawrence but excellent performances from a stellar cast (again including de Niro).
I could go on for about fifty films but those just sprung to mind for some reason.
