these few months won't have been the biggest problem

the biggest problem is that we have a tired old squad of players that we have to shift before we can get new players in to freshen up the squad. Because they are hard to shift we were forced to take a gamble that they had another good year left in them but it seems to be a Championship season too far for too many.
In retrospect (which is piss easy and a luxury the club don't have!) we should have shipped out Brady in the summer, even if we had to take the £12m we were allegedly offered. But the Board would have been absolutely slaughtered if they had actually done that at the time.
We are now basically in the trap that actually affects most relegated Prem teams - we're far from unique here. Stuck with too many players on Prem wages that no-one in the Prem really wants. They don't have the hunger any more that is needed to get out of this division but you can't shift them to free up resources to freshen up the squad. It's not actually an easy problem to avoid.
