the point is that it's a new signing that won't cost us much (relatively speaking)

So the Board gets to say that it is backing the manager and bringing in new players without risking much outlay.

The Board can also defend itself from accusations of not doing anything by saying 'but we brought new players in'.

If they don't work out, 'well at least we tried'.

If we play any of our youngsters and they don't perform, the Board gets a hammering for not bringing in new faces.
