there was a bloke on the radio this morning saying that, he said as f**ked up as 2016 has been (Syria and Aleppo in particular), compared to most years, historically, it needs to be put into perspective

something about there being 90-ish dictators 50 years ago, now there's only 28-ish

fewer wars between countries happening now then at any time - the UN and the EU and other international bodies (though obviously far from perfect) have been a large part in things not getting to that point
