I think the only spell where i've really felt we were on track was

The first half of the McNally tenure. I know (because they told me in a pub) that at that stage in events and after the Gunn episode Delia and MWJ both took a step back and effectively just left McNally to get on with running the club.

You can even argue that when Lambert went, Hughton was the right appointment for what we needed at that time.

Where it all started to go wrong was half way through that second Hughton season where for whatever reason I believe McNally took his eye off the ball and left it too late to make a change that probably could and would have seen us stay up and continue building.
