Same thing happen with Paterno - he was a huge name, and widely respected as doing things the right way. In my opnion he was thrown right under the bus to deflect from the details of what was (not) done about it by the authorities, university management and even police.
(Not defending him but his crime was to report it to the management of the University who said they would inform the police, but never did. Paterno didn't report it directly to the police himself. Was one of the least guilty in the entire episode yet was by far the biggest public casualty)
