Best you can do is try to check anything you find important from multiple sources from multiple countries and come to what you believe to be the best reflection of the truth. Choose what you think are independent fact-based sources although of course that is rather subjective.

In fact I think it's always been that way. Only difference is that these days it's not only the BBC and pathé news reels churning out the propaganda but anybody with an Internet connection and a social media account.
