Our remaining cat was the sister of the one we lost, and very much the less dominant of the two girls. They were close and the one left behind would only go out if her sister did.
She and the new kitten get on fine, even snuggling up together. We planned their introduction carefully. New one was kept in spare room for a couple of days so her scent gradually drifted round the house and each time we'd been in to see the new one, we'd go the existing one and stroke her to put the kittens scent on her.
When we let them first meet we had a load of string and cat toys ready to distract them from each other a bit and after quarter of an hour they were both charging after my daughter who was running up the stairs with a load of string trailing behind her.
The existing cat has clubbed the little one occasionally to put her in her place when she's been too exuberant and climbed all over her back, gnawed at her ears when the bigger one just wants to sleep, but on the whole, they've got on fine.
It's tough on your lad understandably - but kids are pretty resilient and hopefully he'll be back to himself soon, but I do feel for you.
