Yes, the atmosphere might have been better in the 70s/80s...

but the overall experience was grim. Police cordons, fans not being allowed to mix, a pervading threatening atmosphere and the sense that violence was bubbling just below the surface. If it was still like that I'd probably have stopped going long ago.
