He was astounding as a terrified gun for hire in The Magnificent Seven. (Spoilers)

A time when villains and heroes were crystal clear. A tough film shoot with a British Director who had to manage the egos of Brynner and McQueen, who bullied everyone (Brynner beat McQueen in the end.)

Vaughan played his part perfectly. I can't think of a western character who is as frightened, self interested and disinterested at once... He is the scared McQueen, Brynner, Coburn. Bronson etc. He is us, the viewer. And he acted more bravely than any other actor on set because 'serious actors' just didn't do that.

He played a frightened man, when that sort of thing killed a career.
