The problem as I see it is that we've (I say we, i mean repeated generations of British politicians) alienated the European Parliament, or at least it seems that way. They're not keen on doing us any favours, and I have to say I'm not surprised and don't really blame them. We've never gone of our way to do or say anything not in our best interests, for the good of the whole. UKIP went out of their way to be offensive, no less.
Another thing is, as was mentioned on Radio 4 (last week? Can't remember), the rest of Europe doesn't see the EU as financially as we do. For them it's a project, and not solely what's in their economic interests. They might not do what we want just to sell us things.
