Inside the LHC, the vacuum is comparable to interstellar space

in the main beam ring and in particular round the collision points where all the detectors are. This is to avoid super-accelerated very small things scattering off an unwanted atom of gas rather than other super-accelerated very small things going very fast in the opposite direction.
