Missed this last night.

Common confusion between ability setting and streaming. As you say, CWC, streaming assumes all children are good (or bad) across all subjects. Setting allows schools to put children in different ability classes for different subjects. Importantly, it allows movement between sets throughout their school career. Streaming is very rarely used in schools for these reasons. So to answer OG's question, I do not believe in streaming, but have no real issue with setting. Interestingly, there is as much research suggesting mixed ability teaching is as successful as setting... Prof John Hattie's work for instance.

As for Grammar Schools, there is no evidence they are more effective than comprehensives, but loads of evidence that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are excluded from accessing them. Dr Becky Allen (IOE) has written widely on the subject.
