What would people generally expect the effect of substitutions to be on games

Positive, negative. Would you expect us to gain more points and concede less goals as a result of in game substitutions or lose points and ship goals?

My perception was that Lambert gained us a lot of points from substitutions and tactical changes during games. Admittedly on occasion that was because he didn't quite get the starting line up right.
